Truth or Consequences

March 24, 2017
By Pastor Allen

 At the time Jesus came to earth the Jewish people were desperately looking for the Messiah.  The Romans were the occupying force of the day following centuries under the Greeks, the Assyrians, the Persians and the Babylonians.  If anyone ever understood what it was to be in captivity it was the Jews of the 1st Century A.D.

Other people had claimed that they were going to deliver the Jewish people but their revolts ended in disaster.  Now, here was Jesus making bold claims about being one with the Father.  Jesus' proof was in the miracles, but when you are looking for a military or political leader, simple healings are insufficient.  Thus, the Jews missed the Messiah, even when He was standing right in front of them.

How about you and me?  What agenda have we placed on Jesus?  Does he meed your expectations?  I will admit that sometimes God disappoints me.  He's not measuring up to what I think He ought to be doing.  But then I return to Scripture and I realign myself with true definitions of God and of humanity.  And this is not a once a year exercise but daily.  We are so prone to wander.

O to grace how great a debtor  Daily I'm constrained to be!
Let that grace now like a fetter, Bind my wandering heart to Thee.
Prone to wander, Lord, I feel it, Prone to leave the God I love;
Here's my heart, O take and seal it, Seal it for Thy courts above.
