Another Elder Brother
The Christmas Eve message may have surprised you if you are used to a traditional reading of the story of the Prodigal. Tim Keller in his book, "The Prodigal God" tells us that a historical understanding of that story shows us that Jesus was primarily telling that story to the Pharisees who were represented by the elder brother. And on Christmas Eve we were challenged that many of us in the church are just like that brother...
The story of Jonah(a real, historical account which I will address on Sunday) is also an "elder brother" story. He got caught in the trap of believing that the message of salvation was only for the Jews. His hatred, fear and disdain of the Ninevites broke God's heart and the end of the story, like "The Prodigal" leaves us hanging.
