In the movie "Hook" starring Robin Williams(Peter Pan) and Dustin Hoffman(Capt. Hook), the Captain is trying to figure out a way to get at Peter Pan and exclaims, "I've just had an apostrophe!" Smee corrects him by saying, "You mean you had an epiphany!" So, as I was preparing the message this week from Psalm 79 and 1 John 5 I had an epiphany.
When you first look at these passages, you may wonder what they have in common. Psalm79 describes a terrible time when God seems to have forgotten his 'chosen' people. Whereas 1 John 5 speaks of God's love through His Son Jesus Christ. The connection is that the cry of the Old Testament for justice, mercy and revelation of God's love is all revealed in the New Testament in Jesus Christ in his life and on the cross. Yes, it was many hundreds of years between the two passages, but now we have the benefit of seeing history with 20/20 hindsight.
In other words, we have no excuse because we have full knowledge of God's intentions. This is one of the main reasons that I have wanted you to read large portions of Scripture with the intent of reading through the Bible in a year on a regular basis. The more you read, the more you understand the big picture of God's love for people and His purpose.
