The Miracle of the Method
Last year I preached about our temptation to keep cute baby Jesus in the manger. There, he seems safe, adorable and unassuming. But like our own children, he grew up. According to our passages this week, Isaiah 7 and 53, he had a mission even before he was born. In a nutshell: Jesus came to die for our sins. The priest Simeon in Luke 2 points this out by saying: “This child is destined to cause the falling and rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be spoken against, 35 so that the thoughts of many hearts will be revealed. And a sword will pierce your own soul too.”
It's good new because there's bad news. Without Christ we are separated from God. We need to hear the truth. There's a humorous youtube video that you should watch demonstrating the need for truth rather than just sympathy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-4EDhdAHrOg
See you Sunday, the 3rd Sunday of Advent.
1) Thank you for your concern for me and my family. Please continue to pray as many of us travel this weekend from Florida, Kentucky and cities in VA.
2) Plan to say after worship for an inter-generational Sunday School: The Meaning Behind the Music: Christmas Carols - Markus will lead us and tell us what we've been singing about all these years.
